I'm doing #research for my book which is a #sf story about the products of futuristic #geneticengineering and my husband mentioned a great article... that is locked behind a paywall. Working on getting the hardcopy from my in-laws, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask the Fediverse:
What small, plausible tweaks to the human genome could you envision to allow us to live longer, healthier, more productive lives? In a SF world, what would you expect "supersoldier" physiology to look like?
Told my "I was a middle school bully and didn't know it" story today to my 6th graders -- another girl told her story of realizing she had been really mean to her friend, cried, and promise to apologize. Showing students that you are #imperfect is very powerful. #teacherlife
The blurb: Demetrius is a GeneE, genetically engineered to be the world's best sniper. When a luddite revolution ends with the GeneEs fleeing a hostile Earth, he finds himself on a virgin planet with no internet, no coffee, and no guns. There, he'll face his hardest assignment yet: keeping brave -- but unenhanced -- Meghana Davies alive long enough to woo her.

So I posted my SF story THE GENOCIDE DRAFT (which I kind of want to re-name to GeneE: Exodus) to Wattpad about two and a half weeks ago, and today was the first day I got votes/reads from unknown sources. Very exciting!

I've settled on a name for my #ActivityPub #WordPress plugin - #Pterotype! It's an early precursor to the typewriter, which seemed appropriate for WordPress.
Honestly though, the main reason I chose it is now it can have a cute Pterodactyl logo. That will go nicely with Mastodon's prehistoric theme!
Now I just need to find someone who can draw a cute pterodactyl...

@eleanor hi! you can try search on this list

book shops w/o #DRM, on their description you can see some on them are specialized on sci-fi
Thanks, past self, for putting check-boxes on kids' papers while walking around to check on how they're doing while writing their first paragraphs: you're making grading them formally a lot easier! #teacherlife
Is anyone actually surprised by programmers not taking into account the factors necessary to create a successful school bus route? https://yro.slashdot.org/story/18/09/22/2228237/mits-elegant-schoolbus-algorithm-was-no-match-for-angry-parents
I have queued up some SF wattpad serials to read at work this week while I'm waiting for the copier to finish, so that's good. Now to get some grading done. Happy Sunday. #teacherlife
I always enjoy running across people elsewhere who mention Mastodon. I've seen it come up twice so far in only a day of using #Wattpad. Exciting!
I wrote 1350 words on a new #sciencefiction #colonization story. My first attempt at a #romance subplot, I'm very excited even though it took me most of the day to write it. Going to let it ruminate for a week or so and then probably post it up on #wattpad -- I find that serial fiction works better for me with my new work schedule. I don't have time to get bogged down in a whole book :(
Does anybody know a good place online to find science fiction serial fiction? #rec #amreading #help #advice
Using deciduous plants for solar temp control is such a mindblowing and obvious-in-hindsight idea
Plant deciduous climbers over your south-facing wall to insulate/cool the wall during the summer without shading it in the winter! Plant deciduous trees in front of windows! Designing with plants is so cool and it's the closest thing we currently have to widely available biotech!!!!
I actually built a little toy service (that I will also eventually open source) which converts any RSS feed to an ActivityPub actor that you can subscribe to in Mastodon (or any other AP-compatible client).
Play with it if you like! It is SUPER rough and most feeds end up horribly rendered in Mastodon but it's still kinda cool to see it work: https://bots.tinysubversions.com/convert/
