Crap, I think I made a critical error when volunteering to do a charity event for a charity I volunteer for... I thought it took place at 5pm, not 10am -- there's no way I can take off of work. Time to wade through all these emails again, CAREFULLY, and send an update about what I can and can't do :(

...but Hardin & co. made a big mistake: commoners are *not* prisoners! They can move, communicate and organize. Thousands of successful #commons have been recorded.

The false idea that "commons can't work", backed up by inaccurate #gameTheory fed into the creeping #neoliberalism of the late 60's and was snapped up by policy makers world-wide, accelerating the eviction of indigenous people and more.

In response, Elinor #Ostrom and others began to more closely inspect the commons...

@wion From what I understand, humans are evolved more as endurance predators than speed predators; more wolves than cheetahs, if you will. I wonder how the knees play into that... but also it's worth noting that at this stage in our evolution, neither speed nor marathon endurance are our main priority; longevity is. What would _that_ kind of knee look like?

@wion I've seen some interesting stuff about changes to the throat to make it easier to avoid choking hazards, and a lot of alterations to the spine and hips that would force better posture. I like the idea of more efficient digestion -- and as changes to human food production occur, I'm most interested in things that we didn't evolve because they're not "energy efficient" but would totally help out, like wider pelvises allowing bigger brains.

I'm doing for my book which is a story about the products of futuristic and my husband mentioned a great article... that is locked behind a paywall. Working on getting the hardcopy from my in-laws, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask the Fediverse:

What small, plausible tweaks to the human genome could you envision to allow us to live longer, healthier, more productive lives? In a SF world, what would you expect "supersoldier" physiology to look like?

Told my "I was a middle school bully and didn't know it" story today to my 6th graders -- another girl told her story of realizing she had been really mean to her friend, cried, and promise to apologize. Showing students that you are is very powerful.

The blurb: Demetrius is a GeneE, genetically engineered to be the world's best sniper. When a luddite revolution ends with the GeneEs fleeing a hostile Earth, he finds himself on a virgin planet with no internet, no coffee, and no guns. There, he'll face his hardest assignment yet: keeping brave -- but unenhanced -- Meghana Davies alive long enough to woo her.

So I posted my SF story THE GENOCIDE DRAFT (which I kind of want to re-name to GeneE: Exodus) to Wattpad about two and a half weeks ago, and today was the first day I got votes/reads from unknown sources. Very exciting!

I've settled on a name for my #ActivityPub #WordPress plugin - #Pterotype! It's an early precursor to the typewriter, which seemed appropriate for WordPress.

Honestly though, the main reason I chose it is now it can have a cute Pterodactyl logo. That will go nicely with Mastodon's prehistoric theme!

Now I just need to find someone who can draw a cute pterodactyl...

@eloisa

Thanks, past self, for putting check-boxes on kids' papers while walking around to check on how they're doing while writing their first paragraphs: you're making grading them formally a lot easier!

Is anyone actually surprised by programmers not taking into account the factors necessary to create a successful school bus route? yro.slashdot.org/story/18/09/2

I have queued up some SF wattpad serials to read at work this week while I'm waiting for the copier to finish, so that's good. Now to get some grading done. Happy Sunday.

I always enjoy running across people elsewhere who mention Mastodon. I've seen it come up twice so far in only a day of using . Exciting!

Woke up with a pounding headache, which means I took 2 prenatal vitamins, an allergy pill, and 2 tylenol before putting breakfast in the toaster oven.

Is this what getting old feels like?

I wrote 1350 words on a new story. My first attempt at a subplot, I'm very excited even though it took me most of the day to write it. Going to let it ruminate for a week or so and then probably post it up on -- I find that serial fiction works better for me with my new work schedule. I don't have time to get bogged down in a whole book :(

Mastodon

This section describes the mastodon.ubergroup.org instance in particular.

For the official overview of what Mastodon is, visit joinmastodon.org. For the most detailed explanation of how Mastodon works and what the etiquette is, check out a brief introduction to Mastodon by @noelle@mastodon.social.

An "instance" is a "single occurrence of something." In massive multiplayer games, for example, an instance is a single copy of the map where only a few people are working on the quest line, but it is still connected to the rest of the in-game world. This instance is the same; it's a single copy of the Mastodon platform, where the local channel is made up of writers from the Ubergroup, but we're connected to the rest of the federated Mastodon social sphere in an organic way.

Tip: To find people outside of the Ubergroup to follow, you can visit some of the bigger instances like mastodon.social, writing.exchange, and wandering.shop. Check out their public federated timelines and follow some people you find interesting. They'll show up in your home timeline and the Ubergroup federated timeline, but not our local timeline. The local timeline is only what people from the Ubergroup toot and boost. Home is for the people you're personally following.

If your goal is to have more exposure on this new social network, you could also create an account on mastodon.social and follow @you@your.instance, just so that people looking at the mastodon.social public timeline will see @you@your.instance's toots.

Then, boost good things, toot interesting things, and follow interesting people that you see boosted into your home feed and federated timeline. Use hashtags so people can find you. :)

For more information about the rules of this instance, please visit the About page.
