Crap, I think I made a critical error when volunteering to do a charity event for a charity I volunteer for... I thought it took place at 5pm, not 10am -- there's no way I can take off of work. Time to wade through all these emails again, CAREFULLY, and send an update about what I can and can't do :(
This section describes the mastodon.ubergroup.org instance in particular.
For the official overview of what Mastodon is, visit joinmastodon.org. For the most detailed explanation of how Mastodon works and what the etiquette is, check out a brief introduction to Mastodon by @firstname.lastname@example.org.
An "instance" is a "single occurrence of something." In massive multiplayer games, for example, an instance is a single copy of the map where only a few people are working on the quest line, but it is still connected to the rest of the in-game world. This instance is the same; it's a single copy of the Mastodon platform, where the local channel is made up of writers from the Ubergroup, but we're connected to the rest of the federated Mastodon social sphere in an organic way.
Tip: To find people outside of the Ubergroup to follow, you can visit some of the bigger instances like mastodon.social, writing.exchange, and wandering.shop. Check out their public federated timelines and follow some people you find interesting. They'll show up in your home timeline and the Ubergroup federated timeline, but not our local timeline. The local timeline is only what people from the Ubergroup toot and boost. Home is for the people you're personally following.
If your goal is to have more exposure on this new social network, you could also create an account on mastodon.social and follow @email@example.com, just so that people looking at the mastodon.social public timeline will see @firstname.lastname@example.org's toots.
Then, boost good things, toot interesting things, and follow interesting people that you see boosted into your home feed and federated timeline. Use hashtags so people can find you. :)
